Well, it's time to share my project. Since finding sites like this with the resources I needed, I've wanted to restore a tractor as I did with Grandpa so long ago. I had been looking for a candidate for a complete restoration, and found the perfect machine when I picked up a very nice running, complete Big Ten. It came with a Tiller, Blower, Mower, Wheel Weights, and Spring Trip Dozer. I found homes for everything except the dozer, and was able to pay off the investment, plus enough for sandblasting and paint.
I've made a lot of progress, and felt overwhelmed at times with the to-do list and the huge mess my work space has been. I figured it's about time to share, and I will continue to add photos as I make progress. I still have LOTS to do, but it has been very educational, and the end result should make me quite proud =] I'm trying not to rush, and am paying particular attention to the little details, in the hopes that I get years of consistent service out of this machine, while maintaining a looker. It'll be purdy, but it'll be earning it's keep!
I will begin with the 'Before' pics, and hopefully, will have enough pictures to support my tale as I keep going. 1965 Hydrolift Big Ten, 2025061

The plan is to outfit the ol girl with a pile of options I have accumulated. I will be installing Lights, a Toolbox, Dual Lift Kit and HiLo, as the original intention is to have this rig perform strictly as a Garden Queen. I like the rarity of some of these options, and think it will be fun to test their functionality from time to time. =]
And my poached RH lift...

I had a set of rear rims blasted, then rattlecan primed and painted. I am taking everything in this project down to bare metal, and priming with a self etching primer, to maximize adhesion and the smoothness of my finished texture. These rims are wearing Rustoleum 'Canvas White' Enamel, which I am VERY happy with, both with color, and durability. I mounted the AG's myself, and with a prybar, no paint chipped or flaked from the edges. They had spent over a month 'curing' in my basement prior to installation. Also shown are the NOS rims the PO had on the tractor, with my new Triribs. The existing tires were new, but will be spares for another time.

Unfortunately, I do not have a lot of tear down pics, as it was frustrating at times and was a very greasy ordeal, not really suitable for handling the camera phone. I had taken some to help guide me through the jigsaw puzzle of reassembly.

I finally brought a truck load of clean steel home from the sandblaster. The everything was cleaned and primed. Finish surfaces such as the hood, fenders, dash, etc were sanded with 600 grit. They're not too slick, but took away the gritty look the blaster leaves. I had everything sanded, cleaned and primed in only a few hours. The sandblaster saves an incredible amount of sandpaper, wire wheels, and TIME! =] My sandblaster guy is checking into a local plater who might be able to get me a decent deal on a chrome job for some of the shiny accents...fingers crossed.

Was that the original dealers label on the RH side panel? I think it would be interesting to duplicate such labels as it is part of the tractors history. I realize it includes the frame for an FEL but some of those parts are not familiar to me. |

Yup...I kept that panel aside, and replaced it with a nearly new condition side panel I had from a B10. I thought the dealer tag was neat, and wanted to keep it as is. I looked breifly into reproducing it, then decided to move ahead with the B10 panel, and look at that option down the road. =] I'll probably hang it on the garage wall when I'm done. I have a lot of the original dealer paperwork with the machine as well, and saved teh PO's phone number so I can give him a call and share the results when it's ready.
You can only see about half the parts in that picture...EVERYTHING (except the tranny and BGB) is there, stripped and being repainted. There are so many little brackets, collars, etc. If it was bare metalfromteh factory, it's only getting a cleanup job (lift rod, linkages, etc). If it was yellow, it's getting yellow...white, white, etc.
I have only the engine and hydro lift left to clean up, everything else is ready for paint. |

Geez Josh! That is going to be awesome! You are going the full distance on it, for sure. You should redo the weedcutter in yellow to match that badboy! :) I have never seen a weedcutter in Allis paint, either in person or the old brochures. Likewise the carry all box I have, until I saw one on a Big10 in a picture at a tractor show. Didn't know if he just painted it that way or Allis actually did market some. I think the yellow weedcutter would look sweet! Unfortunately not original however...... |

Im thrilled...intimidated, but thrilled. I thought about that weedcutter, but haven't bitten off any more than I can chew...yet! The loader is on hold until the tractor's done...and then there's the sickle bar...
I'll be busy for a while! If anybody has seen weedcutter decals, Im all ears. |

I haven't seen the decals, Daniel might be able to do them? The few weedcutters I've seen all have tears in the decals! So far mine is the only one with a serial number. On yours Josh you can see where it was, lower right side you can see where a sticker was but now is gone. Mine is #1100 something, be nice to know how many were made. |
