Do you guys think I just have deck envy by wanting a bigger deck? Are they that much more effective? will my wife treat me different? I want one. |

When I mowed for the first time after going from a 42 to a 48 champagne popped open, ticker tape fell from the heavens, angels sang, and the grass shuddered in fear. Yep. :) I actually feel I mow quicker in the wide open spacers (obviously), but I do notice in the tight spaces I have to be more careful, slowing me down a bit. |

Have you tried going through that 4 ft gate with the 48" mower? BTW I am sitting here with my finger on the "bleeping button". Y'all are mighty *bleep* close to the *bleep* edge with your smart *bleep* posts. *bleeeeeep, bleep* |

I think the biggest advantage of the 48" deck is extends 3" further, making it easier to mow up close |

I was hoping for fireworks, all that would be okay. I just want my first time to be "special" |

My personal experience having several of both decks, the 42 gives a much better cut on rougher "yards". The 48 gets the job done quicker, but it just is not as nice a finish as the 42. In the mid to late summer, when all you are mowing is the buckhorn and the grass is growing very little, you can move to the 48 and not notice much difference.
Just my experience. Maybe if I had a nicely sodded "lawn" that had no bumps, hills, or other geographical anomalies, I wouldn't see that much difference. |

I've notice the same thing, My 48 inch deck on the Massey seem to float over areas and not cut, were as the 42 follows the contour much better. |

I know I could get expelled for it, but I have a 72" deck & my wife LOVES it! LOL My John Deere F935 cuts 6' at a lick, and I get the farm area & roadsides mowed fast! My Allis was my main mower, but my BIL has her now. It had a very nice cutting 48" deck, but wouldn't fit into some places. My Kubota G4200 has a 42" deck & fits everywhere here at my place. Slightly longer mowing times, but I really like having a rider with the 42" deck under it. Yep, size does matter, but if you can't use it, ya might as well lose it! LOL |

I will also chime in supporting the 42" deck. I have mowed this 2 acre yard with many different decks and the Simplicity 42" deck easily wins hands down. I am seriously thinking about putting one under my Bolens GT2000 if it can be done with a reasonable amount of work.

it not how big your deck is, its how you use your deck when your working it hard or slow. take care of your deck, wash it when your done, and it should last you a life time |
