I was out last Wednesday and saw the first pea blooms

I went out today and discovered that I have little pea pods all over my vines. I suppose they will be starting harvest by the end of the week.

I also noticed that my Roma tomatoes are starting to turn so I put nets over them to keep the birds at bay. Early Girls are not far behind. I harvested no tomatoes last year when I decided to plant directly in the ground.

I just planted most of the garden yesterday, we still have some plants inside that need to be transplanted. I was afraid of high winds and they have not been outside much.

Really Phil!? Low of 40 tonight, 38 tomorrow according to the weatherman here! I'm not even thinking of planting peas or beans. Of course the 2" of rain last night means the plantings of onions and broccoli I did untill dark last night will be all for a while. Calling for four days of rain in the coming week! Guess I can take the tiller back off the Homesteader.

Basically, keep the pretty pics coming, I will garden vicariously through you for a while!

Yes I have. Used to have lots of pine needles years ago but trees are gone now have to pay $8 per bale and the baling machine really screws up the needles. I have started using leaf litter on my other plants to conserve moisture. I have never mulched corn until this year and only did a portion which has shot ahead of the unmulched so I am going to mulch the rest this weekend and cut back on my watering. One thing I always have is leaves 170-200 bushels per year.

Not happy with garden this year... I had a low spot in garden so I brought in "garden soil" from the nursery while I was doing some work on my yard. It was great looking stuff, nice and black, but I thought the it smelled kinda winey. I spread it in my garden and it has stunted the growth of every thing in that area of the garden. Corn on one end of row is 4 ft tall and on the other 6-8 inches. Not even my okra is growing. I need to replant somewhere else if I want a crop this year. I am thinking the organic matter in the soil was not well rotted and is tying up all the nitrogen. Never again! I guess I need to get a soil test kit and see what I can do the fix the problem other than let it sit fallow.

Harvest around 20 heads broccoli so far...20 or so more to go. Not bad! Here's 2 pickings. Lots better than cucumbers or Okra!
