Hi all,

Thought I'd share my current project with you guys, my 1978 Ford F100 pickup that I am currently working over. Here is a link to the "official blog."

http://kope-f100.blogspot.com/

I inherited this truck from my Grandpa, who loved it dearly. I got it running, and drove it a few thousand miles to see what it needed. Just about every seal in the engine was shot, so I decided that engine removal was necessary, and that if it needed new bearings/rings, I'd do that while I was at it.

I just got the engine and transmission out tonight. I'll post more about it soon, including some pictures, and my "game plan." I'm too tired to compose tonight.

Regards,
Andy

Hard to let those gifts from family members go. Looks like a good project. Did Sam Walmart drive one of those?

Well, there have been a few updates on this project- you can view them at the link above, if you're interested or bored-

My game plan for this truck is pretty simple- I want something fun to drive, that I think my Grandpa would have appreciated. Of course I'll have a bit of my own twist on it too... It's going to be a mostly plain looking truck that looks like a bit like a hot-rod, but nothing drastic. I'd call it tasteful, but other people might think a low-rider is tasteful, haha.

I had been planning on using the original engine, but I have sort of lucked into a deal on a late-model 302. The late model engines use roller cams, and have forged pistons, better heads, etc. A roller cam will get me a bit more power, and a lot more efficiency, so I think it's a good choice.

Hopefully I can get the engine to about 9.5:1 compression. I plan on mildly porting the heads, and doing a "good" valve job. One of the few splurges I'll be taking is on a set of roller rockers, the idea being that I want to minimize friction in the engine.

I'm planning on bumping up the cam a bit, and I'll be using a high-rise dual plane intake, with a 4bbl 4150 Holley. The 4150 is vacuum secondary, which will provide some nice street manners. I am also going to run the bearing clearances on the loose side of spec. I'll lose a bit of oil pressure, but the engine will run stronger, and have a better oil film.

Using the stock transmission, a C4, I am going to tear it down for inspection, and modify the oiling passages so the transmission lubricates itself like a C5. Pretty easy to do, and all it takes is a drill bit. I will also modify the valve body for stiffer shifts, and no 2-3 overlap.

The rear end on the truck is a 9", and has 3.25 gears. It seems to have excess backlash, so I might have to swap in a new gear set. If that happens, I'll probably go with 3.50 gears, and a posi-traction unit, but I'd rather leave the rear stock if I can get away with it for now.

At any rate, I hope to have it going soon. I think it might take me until next spring unfortunately, but I believe it will be worth the wait. At least that's what I keep telling myself, as I get itching to drive it.

Thought y'all might enjoy an update-

Andrew
