I got the bug again

some of you may know I have always liked Bolens tractors

I found a decent 1556 hydrostatic for $300 and am picking it up tomorrow..does not run but the guy says its just from sitting...hopefully he is not a rip off guy because its a heck of a drive

this will be my first Bolens Hydro..all my previous ones were just gear drive...hopefully I dont get too attached to it ..my plan is to repair and flip it

are these good engines?...it looks just like this one but in a little rougher shape and doesnt have the weird cowl on the back...Im waiting for a reply from the person to know what type of shaft it has

i just noticed the same guy still had the same engine for sale lol...he replied this time so I went and checked it out...got it for $100....pretty rough though and its been sitting in an outdoor shed...Ill probably pull the heads to check cylinders for rust damage before cranking it

That is one fine looking machine! Thanks for the muffler tip, will have to check on that one.

I saw an old pedal bike today with good sized springs under the seat that would work good but the guy wanted $5 just for the seat...I'd rather just spend $10 on a new one at walmart and take the springs from that

the muffler (in case anyone was looking for some of that style for other tractors) is a walker 22022 ...sourced from my local carquest place...price $30..I like those larger mufflers but still thought it was noisy so thats why you see the regular muffler welded to the walkers outlet

I cant picture what youre saying

but you just gave a good place to find springs..Ill check for rocker chairs next time I go to the dump

it has a hinge on the front ...looks like an MTD seat mount...I have a nice spring plate somewhere off an old bolens but havent been able to find where I hid it

Brad,

Just did a seat spring job on my D/A 612, took the springs from an old swivel rocker chair,5/8 or 3/4 washers, and 5/16 bolts, washers,3/8 flare nuts, and 5/16 self locking nuts.

Started under the seat pan and worked up, 5/16 bolt and washer, inserted the 5/8 or 3/4 washer into the last coil of the spring, inverted the 3/8 flange nut as a spacer, then put a 5/16 flat washer and self locking nut.

ALL sizes may vary, but that's what worked for me.

Made for a smooth ride.

Respectfully Doug,

Allis, the girl for me.

Looks Beautiful! Great job!
BRAD1975 Posted - 09/20/2010 : 15:25:33
I need to find two springs for under seat...for now I just use a 2x4 piece to keep it raised a bit so the seat doesnt scratch the rear of the fender
BRAD1975 Posted - 09/20/2010 : 15:23:43
that briggs guy never did respond to any of my emails so I used the HMSK120 engine I had

I like the way it works and decided to keep it for a while...it is also for sale but I put a ridiculous price ($1000) and dont really expect any hits on it

you can see the before pics on the first page...here is an after pic...I did not really like the white so I painted it two shades of grey

BRAD1975- moved... you should be able to change the title yourself, if you can't let me know.

can you move this thread to the "other tractors" section so I can find easier...wont get buried there...also maybe change the title to "Bolens 1556"

thanks

BRAD1975 Posted - 08/30/2010 : 22:45:54
the motor guy is one of those people who posts ads and never answers replies

got the oh120 mounted in and took a spin around the yard...the hydro rear is noisy but seems to work just fine considering its older than me

I also painted the hood white then changed my mind and painted it gray

ordered decals last week too to make it look a little nicer

If you use it make dam' sure you keep the grass out of the fins because they can overheat and drop a valve seat!!

And you can take that to the bank!

hopefully they reply tomorrow ...I think Ill buy it no matter what the shaft ..anything higher than 12hp in horizontal is hard to come by here and even if I dont use it for this Ill need it for something else in the future :d
