A couple of years ago I decided to convert my tow behind dethatcher to a front mounted unit. I wanted to be able to convert it back so everything I did is easily reversible. I mounted some wheels on a piece of channel to control the how much the unit digs into the lawn. I used washers to set the height of the wheels. I found if the unit digs in too much you won't be able to steer the tractor. Even now sometimes the tractor follows the dethatcher and not the front tires. I made up a lift rod like what is used with a plow. I had one that was fixed in length but ran into problems with the steering. This set up lets it float better. On occassion I do raise up the dethatcher, and of course the deck comes up as well, to make tight radius turns. What I like the most about this arrangement is that the clumps of grass get cut up with the mower. What I don't like is if you have lots of branches on the lawn you'll have to clean them out of the dethatcher after they accumulate. Which is okay if you want to use the dethatcher as a rake.
Good build. The dethatcher is light enough that a separate manual lift would b e better for picking it up on sharp turns. In that case the float would be automatic.
