I picked up an origional Simplicity yard roller, it's in pretty rough shape as it appears to have been frozen sometime. It has convex ends on the roller tank but the pictures that I have located seam to have flat ends. It could be the way they are sitting in the pictures but I would just like to know whats out there. I am going to build a new tank and flat ends would be pretty simple. Convex ends are not impossible just a lot more work.

Down here we have little use for one. What we need are aerators. |

I have never laid eyes on an OEM roller. What a neat find! I've watched hard for one. It's one of those things that most folks would probably overlook as 'Simplicity'. I'll bet most got pretty rough over the years and went to scrap. I was always of the impression they were flat on the ends. Around here, rollers that aren't drained will 'pop' out like that when they freeze, and usually, even pop the seams and require repair.
Any pictures of the unit you picked up? |

I will try to get some tonite, I do belive that the ends on this one were convex. One end is in great shape and the other is all bent to you know what because to PO said it froze at one time. If there was indeed a version whish had flat ends I will make a new tank in that style |

Upon further review I believe the ends were flat. Most likely they were swelled out when it froze at one time. It appears to me the frame has been “sprung”. It will be well worth the effort it will take to fix it.

Chris; your roller appears to be newer and wider than my original. Mine uses the dump cart frame and the roller sits in where the axle goes.I believe this one might have been for the Wonderboy RER. My ends are flat but recessed as can be seen in the pic....Dave

Those look great! Dave, yours looks like it has the long tongue of a walk behind. Does your sulky have the ability to mount to that? That would be really neat to see!
Chris...IN isn't that far. Keep me in mind if it becomes a trip hazard =] |

I don't know, but if you look at the position of the pipe plug I would say that it was made with convex ends because there is no other mechanism to keep the plugs from contacting the frame. It may have frozen and bulged the end caps more bending the frame but I think it stands to reason they were originally convex. |

Phil, I was sure the ends were convex when I first seen it. My reasoning for now believing the ends were at on time flat is because as of now one end is convex and the other end has been beaten back to clear the frame. The frame is sprung outward and the roller barely clears the frame. I haven’t had a chance to cut it apart yet but my guess it’s made of light gauge steel, which wouldn’t be much resistance for freezing ice. Hopefully over the weekend I will be able to get a better look at it. Lucky for me I have all the equipment here at work to build a new tank and bring this back to life. |

I'm just thinking that if the ends were flat the bungs would hit the frame. |

Josh... the frame on mine is same as tractor drawn dump cart with shorter tongue. I have not measured it but believe it will fit the sulky dump cart frame for the walk behinds. Simplicity did make one for that use. Chris... can't you just cut off the convex ends and weld on new flat ones with axle stubs? No need to fabricate a whole new drum. Frame should be easy to fix. Phil...they make bungs with a recessed hex for uses like that. Would not stick out more than about 1 thread thickness. Take out with a standard 1/2in. hex key......Dave |

When I get the ends cut off I will inspect the drum to be sure its OK. If so I will just make new ends. |
