Here's one a long time in the making...I picked this old girl up a little over a year and a half ago. I've always been interested in the Wards machines, and just HAD to have this one when it was offered up on the east side of the state. It was pretty sound, and with the exception of a boogered up hood, had nice steel. The 23D would fire, good enough for me. Included the Bronze deck, and it sat until this past winter.

With the lack of snow, I decided to dig it out of my parent's barn, and tear into it. 45 minutes later I had a lot of dirty parts strewn about. Uninterested in the deck at the time, I wanted to redo an attachment with the machine, and decided on a Carryall I had picked up from the estate of Maynard Greenwood. (I hope he approves of the new color!)

Got everything sandblasted, and then worked with VanSickle to match the OEM color (plus some added metal flake).

I pulled the Wards decals with a heat gun and sent them off to Nate @ clickitandstickit, then we sorted through the various LL decals they already offered to get a correct set for the Squire 9 & 10 (I added a couple custom pieces to mine...needed a hood badge!).

About this time, life happened, and things got put on hold. I'd paint a bit when I could, and when the weather allowed. Since we're now in limbo between selling and closing on our old/new houses, and my basement was buried in finished tractor parts, I decided to slap her together before moving begins (easier to transport as a roller, than as boxes of parts)

The Carryall turned out beautifully...couldn't be happier. This should make a nice butt-buggy for next summer's shows (assuming I can get away here and there, and that a carseat can be strapped in sufficiently)

So that's where I stand this week. My spark was so-so before, and I've since snapped off the plug wire, so I'm converting to a battery ignition for now, vs spending time and lots of $$ on a replacement coil for the 23D. I hope to grab a coil today, wire things in, and add the final 5 panels to her over the weekend, but it's a busy one for us, so that might be a stretch. Heck, it might even run =]

Beautiful I have a 9hp Squire adding hydro lift hi-lo and 14hp engine and harley lights.
I need that paint code please. I think Maynard would love that carry all. As far as spark for the 23d you can swap 10hp parts coil bracket, coil and flywheel.

I considered making the transition, but for the sake of time (and I don't have much, we close on our house this week), I decided to go 12v for now. I do like the spark I get on my Big Ten with that setup, and might even tuck this one away, under the gas tank. I did go through and refinish a HiLo for the old girl, but I don't think she'll wear it. I would like to dedicate it to some kind of lawn chore, and I'm thinking it might be a sicklebar machine. I have enough pain left to do two attachments, I believe, and that might be one of them.

VanSickle needs the paint ordered through TISCO...here's their instructions to me:

"Please contact TISCO @ 800-335-0145 and reference product number CML 2005 Simplicity / Montgomery Ward Tan Metallic "

I had sent them a drawbar link that had great original color on one side, that they used for the color match. A gallon was about $80, out the door at my local TISCO dealer. Took about a week to get.

Beautiful work Josh! I have quite a few candidates for restoration, but sadly....no time to think about starting another.

Josh, that is just plain beautiful! Fine job. I have always thought they looked sweet in that color! Will be a real eye catcher at the shows.

I really like the detail in that restoration. Stickers, engine, tires, etc. Just nice work. Thank you for the reference to the sticker maker, that will help us all out!

Thanks! With any luck you can all see the finished product some time tomorrow. I got side tracked today, but that's another topic. =]

Larry, I'm not sure yet...I'm thinking a Bronze sicklebar would be a nice touch, and it will probably be a dedicated E-Z Rake tractor as well. It would make a great plow pullin machine too! Too busy to get anything started right now, but winter is coming, and I'll have a nice workspace soon. So far, I'm thinking dedicated:

Harvester (Garden veggie-fetcher w/the Carryall) and
Sicklebar machine or
E-Z Rake machine

I'm loving those Exide 51R's, since your tip on them here. (Thanks!) TSC always has 1 or 2 on the shelf here. My Tractor Supply is about 15 minutes away, and they occasionally mail a 10% or 20% coupon which makes them a real deal. I got this one for $56...pretty good for a 5 yr, 450cca battery. The 51R the PO left in my 3212H is dated 2005 and doesn't miss a beat.

Good luck finding a bronze sickle bar! I'm currently paying $75 w/ trade for an Exide 51R with 72 month warranty, 2 year replacement. They are the best. $56 is a great price.

Edit: Thats a 60 month pro-rated and 2 year replacement. Sold by Sanels with thier name on them

Yeah, I've never even heard tell of one, but will be 'making' mine

More progress this morning...maybe some more later this afternoon after some family stuff.

I tried to route my wiring in a bit nicer way than on the Big Ten. I looked that over today, and it's a rat's nest compared to this machine.

Hid the 12v coil, vs mounting up top. No hydrolift makes for lots of room, and ease of assembly.

Some more touches...NOS hood bolts

Here she is...Don't think I'll have time to fiddle with the carb tonite. Got her some fresh oil, completed the wiring and added the remaining parts. Still need to wire in and add lights, then she's DONE.

Carryall fits the bill perfectly...

I'm thrilled with the finish...this paint is gorgeous. I'll take it over the AC yellow or Simp orange any day. In person that metalflake really has a nice glimmer to it

Very nice Josh. I especially like the carryall and toolbox setup. Dave
