i picked a pair of tecumseh vert OHV 15.5HP engines..one is fine (diff broke on tractor)..other was intended as parts but of course i have to check it first to see if maybe its worth saving

anyways today i started to check it out and it turns fine...seems tight but its been sitting a while so I sprayed penetrating oil in the plug hole and gave it more turns...the muffler is off and i noticed the valve wasnt moving so i removed the OHV cover and seen both rockers were off...when i put them back on (without messing up the jam nut setting) they seem fine and the valves move as normal without being loose

so my question is what would have caused them to fall off like that?

Brad. Valves could have stuck open momentarily (possibly from over rev if he held gov. linkage open) causing excess free play in pushrod clearance. Just a guess on my part. Dave

And that is close enough.

thanks..its good to at least know someones elses guess is the same as mine

i cant find anything about this ..been searching google and learned a few things about how important valve clearances are on this motor

...and googles tells me that Daniel Oldcowhand is on WAY TOO MANY FORUMS lol...and he uses the same avatar all the time :D

engine looks like a keeper so far..i guess ill just put it together and see how it runs

cranked it over today and it seems fine...good blue spark

the oil is digusting and black...so now my guess is leaning towards a possible overheat because there was very little oil..i think if it had been drained there would be less...so im thinking it may have overheated due to low oil (and dirty oil) and possibly the valves got a bit tight and rockers slipped off causing a shutdown before it seized??..im stumped at both rockers just sitting there though

my father thinks maybe the valves stuck a bit while sitting on the shelf and then when i turned the engine over the first time the rockers slipped

anyone else have any thoughts?
