Hello Michael, other members,

I have a 12 horse kohler engine and was told I need to let more gas into the engine because it is running too hot. If you could hit me up with some links or could explain that to me that would be great.

Thanx
-Danny

Dan,

To increase the fuel flow the carburetor main jet needs to be backed out (e.g. turn counter-clockwise). I'm not all that familiar with Kohler carburetors. I'm sure others here can give you detailed instructions on "how to" adjust the main jet.
Also check to make sure you have good fuel flow to the carburetor and that the tank cap vent hole is open.
Suggest you also check inside the engine blower housing/sheet metal to make sure it is not clogged with trash and/or mouse nests. Insufficient air flow is a common cause for overheating.
Let us know what you find and how it comes out.

Roy

Danny, I'm not too experienced with Kohler engines, but as you asked I am pretty good at finding information. (I live behind a computer screen quite a lot.) Anyway, in my "other links page"; http://www.michaelstractors.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=12 you will find the "Perr Engine Forum". I really appreciate you asking you questions here so that the talented tractor fans can share with you their first hand experiences. If we can't help you, the engine forum is a place which specializes in actual engine repair (he caters to students.) I'll see what I can find to add to this link too. Let's see what others have to add. Glad to see you stopping in.

There is a screw that sticks straight up (vertical to the ground). You would first want to gently turn the screw CW until it bottoms out (lightly) do not force. Then back it out 2 full turns. crank you motor and let it warm up fully. After it is warm increase the motor to full throttle (really should be at full load but that is really difficult to accomplish safely.) Slowly turn the main screw CW until it starts to slow ( overly lean setting) then back CCW until it regains speed and continue noting how many turns it takes until it once again starts to slow (over rich) Then turn the screw back to a point 1/2 way between the overly rich and overly lean settings. Then you must check your idle speed. If it is idling at 1450 to 1500 Rpm Smoothly leave it be. If not the idle mixture screw in in the carb body at a 45 Degree angle tilted toward the front of the engine. Just like with the main fuel mixture screw, gently turn it CW until it bottoms out lightly then back it open CCW 1 1/2 turns. Restart you motor and check the idle. Adjust RPM with the throttle stop screw on the throttle linkage then adjust your idle mixture screw CW and CCW to find the point where it idles smoothest. Recheck you idle speed then make any minor adjustment on the idle mixture to maintain a smooth idle. In use if you find the engine taking time outs or missing under full load make slight adjustment CCW on the main fuel mixture screw until the operation becomes smooth. Just remember "A little overly rich is far better than overly lean" especially on the Kohler that likes to burn valves on lean engines. Always ere on the rich side.

Dan, Just noticed you post. I am glad you got it adjusted out properly. As Esso used to say, "Happy Motoring!"
