The 12 hp in my Ford LGT-125 is a hard starter but runs OK. But, under a neutral load condition it sounds like the rod is about to come through the block. This may be due to the engine oil pan being welded to, and used as, part of the frame. Or, it may be an indication of imminent failure. Just wondering what opinion those familiar with Kohlers have regarding the situation.
Thanks,

Roy

Did you jiggle the handle to see if the noise stops

I'll try it. Just tell me where the handle is.

Roy, That is something akin to checking the nut that holds the steering wheel. As I recall our old AC 312D had a rattle under light load like piston slap but as far as I know we never had any problems related to that.

Had a K341 do the same thing. Turned out there was preload on the crank brearings & needed more shim gaskets under the bearing carrier plate (flywheel shrouding backing plate). Added proper amount of shims & noise went away. The welded pan wouldn't make a difference IMO.

I have a 716H w/Kohler that has a section of the mounting frame cracked and vibrated near a bolt hole, to the point you can't bolt down the 4th bolt. At a speed just above idle the engine starts a vibration (might be concidered) hammering, then speeded up, no noise like that. I think the engine is slightly allowed to raise up and down causing a slapping noise.

Sounds like if I'm lucky the noise is nothing to worry about. On the other hand, knowing Kohler's fame for throwing rods, I'm deathly afraid it is a loose rod.
Will look things over to see if I can spot anything obviously wrong.
Thanks to all,

Roy
