All at once, after nearly 20 years of use, the Ariens is drinking oil faster than I can keep it in. Tractor is runnig like a top, but blowin a nasty cloud of smoke. Bythe time I've mowed 2 acres, she's as near to empty on oil as you wou ld ever want to get.

Any tips, or thoughts before I get into this thing? 14hp Briggs 261777...

Tell which engine you have and I'll see what a rebuild kit costs, or I can get darn good prices on new repower engines

Here's one on ebay, it's used no smoke, runs good, bid is at 120.00, I'd look for 16hp vanguards on ebay also, more of them. I can get new ones for about 650.00

My hope is to get the problem fixed...a couple valve seals, or maybe just relacing a plugged filter. BUT, it would be nice to bump up to a bigger motor. I think that 14 Vangaurd single was the smallest they had available on teh HT's. It does a fine job mowing, mulching, and pushing snow, but this is the first hickup we've had.

Sounds like you've a blown head gasket. It is OHV right? They can blow & still run strong, just a little compression leaking into valve cover will force oil into the intake through the crankcase breather tube & make them smoke like the devil.

Daniels right, saw a Kohler 25 horse my friend thought he blew up, rubber gasket on the valve cover was leaking. I'd watch ebay, I see 16hp vanguard twins at very good prices, less than a rebuild, the tractors definitely worth a upgraded engine
