The original belt was getting decidedly frayed and fuzzy, and the idler had a good 1/8" play so.... It was time. Note that the bottom of the cowl is held on by the anchor bolt on the brake band, and the nut on the actuator rod had to be removed to get enough clearnce to get the anchor bolt out. Couldn't see that in the manual. The cowl has to come completely off to change the belt. Also note in first picture you can see the belt was tracking against the inside. This was done so they could hook the tension spring around the idler bolt and still put it together. They have a second nut on the end of the bolt to keep the spring from sliding off. They had a half inch, I put 2 washers with the idlers spacer and centered it up, leaving 1/4" for the spring

Quite a pile of crud underneath when I was done!

larry, those pictures are kinda like the old VD scare photos or autopsy photos they publish to scare folks to stop smoking, drinking, overeating and make them start living a clean life. Now everyone with an old Vickers transmission is gong to go out and clean the heat exchanger.

That conjures up a mental image that is unbearable.

I keep wondering why Simplicity painted the mower decks white. Probably some sadistic person made that decision. I think it's the worst color you could pick for something that drags across the ground and gets covered in dirt and grass.
