Just a quick bit of advice on the oven cleaner...if put on aluminum for over 30 seconds, it tends to cause black stains that will not come off. I would never use it on polished aluminum! Otherwise it works great. It's what we use on our large farm tractors when cleaning engines before servicing.

Hi Folks,
I just took my gearbox out last night to take a look at the gears and to find out if it was reversible, which I found is not. I'm trying to fit a 21HP Vanguard in my GTH-L tractor and I would like to use the PTO, not the flywheel to install it, so that the front of the engine is at the front of the tractor. This way the grass clippings are not sucked into the engine's air intake. As the gearbox is not reversible, I will have to install the engine facing backwards or find a reversible gearbox, or one that rotates counterclockwise. Any ideas?

BGB (bevel gear box) can be reversed. But it does require machine work.

"air cooled yes. motocraft oil filter 302 ford filter. mods bevel output gear has to be moved from the right to the leftside of input gear new keyway cut, spacer made to replace bevel gear on the right, a locking collar to hold moved gear inplace. engine wt 80#. steering about the same, slipped thrust bearing under front king pins"

Above is from this link:

However, much easier to clean the engine screen and blow the engine tin out after each mowing. Some install a short "skirt" on the bottom, front edge of the deck to minimize "blowout". I replaced the gull wing blades on my deck with straight blades to reduce the blowout.

Smoothops, I guess you know you are going to be sitting with that big Vanguard blowing lots of heat right back into your lap. You'll need to wear water cooled briefs.
