What do you use to measure RPM? I have an old antique AC Hand Tachometer my father used to use to check PTO's in the '50's and '60's.

Right now, it's been just the ear. Though I bought one of the $59 seven function Craftsmen meters and hope to outline some diagnostic techniques using it. I also bought the infrared thermometer from Craftsmen and I've been reading my boat's engine/exhaust tempuratures with that. Might be interesting what we get on the old Simplicity/AC Tractors.

I have been thinking of an IR thermometer to check my Briggs motor for hot spots and see how engine RPM under workloads effects the temperature of the motor.

I use a "vibratach". Works very well too. Works on any engine, or moving shaft.
