For making lift cables a cable swaging tool is a handy thing to have.
Mine came from Aircraft Tool Supply Company and Cost $13.95 at the time.

Swaging Tool:

The description is:
HAND CABLE SWAGER (#2)
P/N 2
Ideal for quick swaging of nicopress sleeves onto cables. Swages: 1/16", 3/32", and 1/8" cables. Comes with GO-NO-GO gauge. Works with copper or aluminum swag sleeves only- Doesn't work with stainless steel.
Price: $17.95 Qty

Their web site is:

Although they say it is only for copper or aluminum crimp sleeves I use mine on mild steel and it works just fine.

Put the cable through the hole in a sleeve/ferrule, loosen the tool bolts and place the ferrule in the proper sized hole between the two bars, then tighten the bolts to swage/crimp/compress the ferrule onto the cable.
I used it on a piece of 3/8" round rod I drilled for an 1/8" diameter cable. Put three crimps in a piece of 7/8" long round rod.

Hope this was understandable.

I use a beat up pair of bolt cutters. the jaws are so damaged by trying to cut hardened bolts they have crescent voids custom made for crimping
