Well, not proud of this post on a personal level but it shows how tough our machines are. I am coaching my sons 4th grade soccer team and I mow the practice field since the school seems to think 6 inch tall grass is ok. So here is the Sovereign after a nice mowing.
Since the school is only about 5 miles from my dads I have been using one strap on the tractor to transport. Yesterday night the ratchet mechanism gave out and my tractor rolled off at roughly 35 miles per hour. Luckily, no one was behind me and no one was hurt. After that, my heart sank fearing the worst. I saw a front wheel come off and it come to s stop. I took the afternoon off today to survey the damage and in less than an hour it was mowing again.
The front corners of the deck were gouged and pushed back, but still clearance for the blade to operate. You can see the gouge marks on the blade also from the road.
The wheel was smacked into the spindle and dented it good, this is the wheel that came off.
I put a different wheel on and you can see the damage to the spindle, it was bent when it hit the pavement first with all that weight coming down on it. Axle is fine.
Here you can see the top of the spindle assembly bent enough to contact the tire. I already found a spindle on eBay and it is on it's way.
After checking everything over(I had to tighten the exhaust down tube from the muffler as it came loose, and oddly enough I had to adjust the pto as it was rubbing enough in the disengaged position to smoke a little and spin), I tried mowing a little and it did fine. Amazing there wasn't more damage. I was expecting a snapped rear axle, or a bent or cracked frame, who knows. But this thing is TOUGH.
So firstly, thank God no one was hurt, and secondly, thank God I bought a Simplicity. Now, anyone want an add for using two straps?? |

Boy; am I ever glad I have never done any dumb or stupid things in my life.......said the king of the "hold my beer and watch this" crowd. No harm, no foul Jon and a good lesson learned. Glad you and tractor are relatively unscathed. |

Those are the lessons we don't forget! I have a small mesh deck trailer I use around here that has no front. I had the 917 on it this spring to haul it up the hill to fertilize a hilly pasture. After I was done I loaded it up but didn't tie it down. If I ever want to move it not running it won't roll for anything, but as I started braking for the drive I heard a BANG! I knew immediately what that was. The front axle was now on the tongue of the trailer, fun fun. Nothing hurt though, just embarrassing. |

Lesson learned and no one hurt. Happy ending. 
Neighbor lost his Allis doing 55. The one strap let loose and the Allis turned into scrap metal. Again no one hurt. |
