I was tilling our 50 X 50 garden in the fall and didn't know my wife took this picture. Looks to me that the B10 does a better job than the big green one. At least the machine looks better, the driver is suspect.

Your Welcome Chris, if you need any help uploading let me know. Basically as soon as you sign up you can click on the yellow "UPLOAD" button, then it allows you to "browse" your video files and choose which video you want to upload. While it's uploading you can change the title to what you want and add tag lines so it comes up in searches, just type in things that describe your video, at the bottom just press "save changes". As soon as it finishes uploading you can go to your You Tube channel and send it to people in your address book. I think there are movie files that wont work, like .mov, it likes .MP4 and .wmv

A short, long winded history. This whole project was actually an accident. I wanted to install an air-cooled diesel into a garden tractor for some time. I came by this Wheel Horse and then started looking for an engine. The Chinese engines seemed the only reasonable option but I really was hesitant to go that route. One day while scanning the Minnesota Craig's list I found an ad for this Lister-Petters engine. Low hours (400) and $175.00. It had been in a large construction Highway sign. The alternator was used to keep the batteries charged. I knew nothing about the lister engines so I did a quick search on them. What I found was very impressive. I called and visited with the guy and bought the engine. Except for the hood everything basically went together without a hitch.
This diesel is rated at 8hp. at 3000rpm but is currently running at just 1500 at full throttle. The factory rates it at 5hp. at this rpm. Approximate weight dry is 200 pounds. As stated previously it develops a tremendous amount of torque. We put it up against a pole in 2nd high and the rear tires literally dug themselves into the ground. This was at an idle no less. Fuel consumption is next to nothing. The representative told me that on the Alaskan pipeline they run 24 hours a day and consume 200 gallons of fuel every six months. That works out to just over 1 gallon a day. I do not recall the RPM they are running at though. Seems unbelievable but those are his figures not mine. I think the thing that really gets me is that this is not new technology. These engines have been around for many years. They also don't come cheap. I think they run in the 2 to 4000 dollar range depending on how they are set up. Lister-Petters has a lot of information on their site.
I have a couple of shorts videos of it running but I don't know if I can post them on this site.

My compliments to the creator of that engine combo. Give us more details.

Your Mom didn't raise no fool Daniel. You are sharp. Yes I did install a larger drive pulley. It was taking way too long to get to the other end of the air field. I visited quite a while with a lister rep. while doing this project. Very helpful by the way. He told me that they run these things for up to 40,000 hours on the Alaskan pipe line before an overhaul. That it just incredible if you ask me. He also told be that the crankshaft is huge and weighs as much as the flywheel. I don't know what the flywheel weighs but it is big. I Have had several people that have seen it work tell me I should take it to a tractor pull and see what it will do. So this spring I'm gong to spray some paint on it and we will see if it can pull anything. If nothing else I just love the sound of it when it's turning dirt.

5 REAL HP though! Looks like you increased pulley size to make up for the slower RPM?? I hear those Lister Petters are solid/strong engines!

It's actually an in between model. It is what they called a 10-8. It was after the numbered tractors and and before the named tractors. Or something like that. I had a hard time finding any info on it until I visited on the the WH sites. 10hp. and 8 speed. When you hear me reference the Diesel Wheel Horse this is it. Five HP. at 1500 RPM. In high range, second gear it is almost unstoppable. Paint and finish work this spring.

BTW, what model Wheel Horse is that a C series?
Cvans Posted - 12/23/2010 : 13:39:10
I hope it works for you. Just as a side note we welded a curved piece of pipe onto the back side of this and used it to bury the wires out to the hangar. My 200lb Son stood on the weights as I pulled it through the ground. Most of the trench was cut across the hard packed gravel and clay driveway. Worked fine. I would do it in two passes next time to get the wires deeper.
Post a picture when you get it done and let us know how it works.

Good Idea Chris, nice looking implement, I have something like that I'll try and add weight to and try out.

Trust me, we have plenty of wind in SD. And 6ft corn would be considered on the short side. The only thing that has ever tipped my corn over is large hail and my lousy driving. Last year it was the hail.
Your right of course about the root length of most plants. If we get a gully washer and the soil isn't loose most of the rain runs off. I'm not plowing or even chisel plowing. When this subsoiler goes through the ground it is more like one of those spades they bury underground cable with. Th surface soil is not pulverized so erosion is held to a minimum yet the water can go down into the ground not out into the lake. I have found that I have had to do very little watering after using the subsoiler in the spring.
olcowhand Posted - 12/23/2010 : 10:43:01
We hardly ever turn plow anymore. Only when we get a heavy infestation of certain weeds do we use the moldboard plows. Haven't had the need for 10yrs or more, and then it was just a 20 acre field. We have a couple fields in need of ripping with a sub-soiler and will come spring if the ground is right. Other than that, we are no-till exclusively.

there used to be a bookstore calledd Bollun Books. Liked it so used the name. Most of my friends, you guys included call me Bert. Although I have been called other things. The JD was was disking. It kept missing spots and he had to stop to clean it out. We have had a lot of rain this year so it was really wet. The B10 did a great job, the garden hadn't been done in about 5 yrs. When I started the weeds were 4 ft high. Cut them with the mower and chewed it with the tiller. For a small machine it works hardand long.
