doese anyone know how to test a sending unit to see if its bad or not?

if you're saying that the fuel pump works but the float level does not...then start with the float ..use a digital ohm meter and check that it has a smooth curve of resistance with no gaps

if it shows well then you need to check the ground and associated wiring ..its rarely a gauge problem...id say 90% usually the sender...10% wiring...and 9 0ut of ten times the wiring problem is bad grond

what exactly is the problem?...does your gauge stay at full?..does it stay at empty?..or are you having fuel pump trouble?..

Most vehicles have 4 wires..A ground for the fuel pump as well as a ground for the fuel Guage. Most operate off a 5 volt referance signal..that is why one always lites dimely with a test light and at times may even blink..Get a good ground and use a multimeter! can then also use it to ohm it out for breaks or hot spot's in the spring as mentioned above..Test light's in this day and age are not a good thing to use..Can burn things out Quick and in a hurry! heres a website I use for reference...some models will show wiring diagrams and some wont...Im not sure if it works from outside canada

use the username "tech" and password "tech"......go to "ARRC" and the rest is easy to navigate

its basically a variable resistor...use an ohm meter if the part it out

if its still in the tank youre outta luck and can only check for broken wires or good ground

What are you trying to test? Generally disconnecting the wire and grounding it will peg the gauge.
