Posted - 02/15/2011 : 14:02:38 Fly wheel Magnet help. I don’t know were the magnets go, ????? To the top edge or do they lay down on that ledge in the fly wheel. I placed to magnets in the fly wheel. In the pictures on the Left side is top edge, right side it is on the ledge I am asking about its about ¼” difference. So what’s the right placement. What about spacing of the magnets, I can not see where they might have been originally, I cant even tell if they were glued in or not. There are no signs/indications. The magnets do not appear to be damaged in any way at all, Not one nick or ding. I read about someone putting magnets back in with JB-weld. Of course I will clean everything up real good first. Believe it or not this 20hp Kohler ran with the fly wheel like this it ran poorly but it did run, and I think I am very luck not to have caused a lot of damage. I just happened to turn the motor over buy hand and was looking in behind the fly wheel and saw one magnet move and new that wasn’t right. So here I am and I need your help in getting this old 20 hp Kohler back up and running.

Posted - 03/16/2011 : 00:18:25 center them and evenly spaced out...they are only for the alternator coil and theres no worry for timing...in that first pic you can see the gap size in the rust at around ten o'clock position
if in doubt just use google image search and youll see some similar
heres one that looks to have one loose magnet

Posted - 02/15/2011 : 18:21:28 No idea of how they mount then. I've never taken mine apart but the ones I've seen on other engines that I remember of were in their own little recesses. Sorry, not much help from me. I'd check Brian Miller's site and see if he has any pointers or do a Google search. Maybe Alcowhand or somebody else from here would know something.?? It's only been a couple hours. Anybody?? |

Posted - 02/15/2011 : 17:49:11 Hey Richard there is no recess of any kind. So now that I understand that its a chargeing system thing, I guess spacing and the depth that the magnets set on/or above the stator is most important, and glueing them down.
Hey John I would love to see a bunch of pictures of your Allis with the V-twin. I have a real good B112 that will stay orignal. However I also have a Good B110 that could become a B120. I also have a 18hp Kohler thats tight. That most likly would fit in the B110 a bit better.

You may have to figure out the spacing between the magnets and cut some spacers to hold them evenly around the flywheel. I'm trying to think of some sort of expander you could use to hold them tight against the flywheel while your epoxy sets up. Small bicyle inner tube maybe???
My engine has a different, but similar charging system, I have not had the flywheel off so I am not sure how the magnets are held in place on mine.
I was hoping you were going to put the Kohler in a Simplicity or Allis, I believe Richard L and I are the only two on the forum with a 2 cyl Kohler in a Simp or Allis frame.

Posted - 02/15/2011 : 15:13:00 What will I do with this engine. Well I have a Wheel Horse B60 that has a lot of room under the hood, and side shaft belt drive makes things a bit easer to mount. That was the plan, But yesterday I picked up a Wheel Horse B80 real cheap and it is sorta bad shape so I think the 20 hp will end up in that just for GARDEN TRACTOR PULLS.
B60 & B80 pretty much the same tractor only differance is rope start & 6hp and the B80 is electric and 8hp.

Posted - 02/15/2011 : 15:11:41 That's a good sign. I would think they are for the charging system only as, if it's a K532 it "should" have a coil. As for where they go I'd also think with a little clean up you should be able to see where they were originally. I would think they would go into a recess of some type. |

Posted - 02/15/2011 : 15:03:19 I was carefull to keep them in the order they came out and not turn them around, i dont know if anyone else has worked on this before me. So it could be all messed up not sure. I think they got knock loose from all the dirt that was stuck in there the motor is 19 years old and looks like it has never been cleaned. I have done some checking, I did not know that these magnets and stator are for the charging system. I was thinking spark / timing. Learn something new all the time.

These engines are real brutes, unfortunately they do not fit into any Simplicty or Allis frames without serious modifications.
What are your plans for the engine? |

Posted - 02/15/2011 : 14:52:03 They are glued in with anything that will make them stick permanent like. JB weld sounds perfect. Only problem is they have to be placed in the correct field position. North is north, south south. If you were lucky enough to have moved 1 you've got a 50-50 chance of putting it back together right. Otherwise I'd be looking for a good used one unless you like playing with puzzles. |

Posted - 02/15/2011 : 14:37:40 Not sure anymore what this Kohler came out of. It was pretty old, Yard pro or something like that. I was looking for a good strong motor and the guy let me unbolt it leave the mower behind, so i was happy.

Don't have any advise on the magnets except that they were probably glued on.
Thanks for posting the pictures, I am currently restoring a 4040 that has been repowered with a Kohler K582 similar to your engine.
