Posted - 09/11/2010 : 10:45:04 Sorry for the slow reply on my part, I was probably cutting the lawn... That's a good looking tractor from someone who has the tractor fever! My 3-pt is not hooked up right now, so I'm jealous! |

Posted - 09/11/2010 : 10:03:52 I never really liked the styling of that particular tractor and why couldn't they have found a more appealing color? I guess mustard yellow was the hot ticket back in those days. Kitchen appliance were all the rage in mustard yellow then. Also, the front grill was notorious for breaking because they were made of fiberglass and the hood stop would yank it all out of shape and break the plastic. At least the Ropers (which are very rare) of that style used a red and white with an opposed twin Briggs. My favorite of all of them was a '69 SS12 that was blue and white with the nicest style pot metal grill I've ever seen on a garden tractor, also had a hydro which not many of them had. The 3 speed with a hi/low was a nice setup too but the hydro was a real novelty then. I had a Sears tiller that had the 8 hp engine on it. Sears did have some nice stuff back in the '70's. |

Posted - 09/11/2010 : 09:45:21 I understand they are a strong tractor and there is a great following, but I grew up looking down my nose at Sears power equipent. "Sears" was a pejorative term back then. That is a hard thing to overcome. I think my prejudice against Sears/Crapsman is based on their habit of having Tecumseh add junk to their engines that made they functionally inferior. Inferior isn't a strong enough word, just can't use the word on this forum. Apparently the tractors did not suffer that encumbrance. |

Posted - 09/11/2010 : 00:04:42 First tractor I ever owned was a Sears ST16 with a Tecumseh 16 hp engine and a 48" deck. For the most part this was identical to the tracor pictured just the engine was different. That had to be the toughest tractor I ever owned and I regret the day I sold it. We had a big overgrown field and swamp land behind our house out in Illinois and had mice and snakes crawlng all over the yard and I was on a quest to eliminate that. I used to mow, more like a bushhog, small trees, branches and the like with that thing and by the end of the summer the hole danged field looked like a golf course, no lie. I wound up owning over a dozen Sears garden tractors before I got into the Simplicitys. They are an absolute tank, tough as nails. And yes, they were built by Roper. |

Posted - 09/10/2010 : 18:22:00 It seems that the people that bought Sears big garden tractors must have taken good care of their equipment. That's the 3rd or 4th really nice original Sears large frames I've run across in the last couple months. Either that or they used extremely durable paint.
